Biography
Michal Matejčík – Harpist, Composer, and Artistic Visionary
Matejčík’s music has been showcased on prestigious stages across Europe and the United States, including Berlin, Hamburg, Warsaw, New York, Washington, D.C., and Boston. Career highlights include his role in George Michael’s Symphonica tour, where he performed at 64 concerts, and his collaboration with Il Divo on their European tour. A standout moment was his guest performance at Depeche Mode’s concert in Vienna.
In recent years, Matejčík has focused on his solo career and innovative projects. In 2021, he performed with celebrated tenor Pavol Bršlík at the Viva Musica! festival, where his performance captivated audiences. At the 2022 Bregenzer Festspiele, he performed with the Wiener Symphoniker. His solo interpretation of Philip Glass’s études and metamorphoses premiered in Skalica, Slovakia, in collaboration with acclaimed designer Ašot Haas, who enhanced the performance with immersive visual elements.
In 2023, Matejčík embarked on a U.S. tour with his poetic-musical program “This is My World”, developed with actor Marek Majeský. In 2024, he participated in the groundbreaking project “Transformations of the Harp“, directed by Juraj Bielik, exploring the expressive possibilities of the instrument. Additionally, he regularly contributes to global productions, including Netflix and National Geographic, through recordings at Vienna’s prestigious Synchronstage.
His compositional work also includes the score for the archaeological exhibition”The Prince of Poprad and His Tomb“, as well as the philanthropic project “Stories for Little Pastels“, supporting the White Pastel campaign for the visually impaired. Additionally, his contributions to the “Slovensko Fantastické” project for the Prešporské Theatre demonstrate his ability to merge literature and music in a multi-genre format.
His artistic journey began with harp studies at the Conservatory in Žilina and continued under the guidance of Zuzana Töröková at the State Conservatory in Bratislava. He further honed his skills at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where his talent caught the attention of prestigious orchestras. During his studies, he collaborated with renowned ensembles such as RSO Wien, Wiener Staatsoper, and the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra in Japan, becoming the first Slovak artist to join this esteemed group. He also briefly held the position of principal harpist at the Košice Opera.
Throughout his career, Matejčík has built strong partnerships with leading artists, including singers Katarína Koščová, Katarína Knechtová, Miriam Kaiser, Jana Orlická, pianist Daniel Špiner, multi-flute player Veronika Vitázková. His portfolio also includes participation in unique artistic ventures, such as the “Casa Zia Lina” project on the island of Elba, supported by the Swiss Robert und Lina Thyll-Dürr Stiftung. Since 2014, he has been actively performing in chamber ensembles, blending the harp with unconventional instruments such as the singing saw, oboe, and violin.
Matejčík’s creative endeavors reflect his ability to seamlessly integrate music with other art forms. In his project All the World’s a Stage, he reimagined the iconic monologue from Shakespeare’s As You Like It with an original harp composition. Collaborating with British actor and voice coach Peter Baker, the project delivered a unique fusion of music and dramatic performance. This work was recorded at Art Heart in Bratislava as part of the Voice of the Harp series.
A spokesperson for George Michael released a statement to the Austrian press quoting: “Michal Matejčík plays with confidence and great musicianship, his distinctive sound and his ability to listen and play with George makes him an integral part of the George Michael Symphonica tour.”
